Jan Seliga - a wood - carver from Hrustin, Slovakia
Jan Seliga - Looking back ...
It is for sure that I was not born with a chisel and a carving knife but it is also certain that I have owned a clasp knife known as a "rybka" (little fish) since my childhood. I remember while sitting on the soft grass during cattle grazing I used to carve simple decorative patterns on hazelnut sticks for myself and for my friends. Later, with my first carving tools I tried to make wooden imitations of different toy guns. In my youth, obviously, I did not pay much attention to carving.
Only later in the 70s was I attracted to it again by the smell of linden wood and together with painting attempts and other folk art activities I began carving again, starting with carving characters of men and women in folk costumes. My interest in history inspired me as well. Wooden figures of shepherds, traditional crafstmen and various figures of our national hero Juraj Jánošík and other highwaymen began appearing all around our house.
